Expedition 352: Izu-Bonin-Mariana Forearc
July 2014 - September 2014
The principal aim of is to examine magmatic evolution, chemostratigraphy and arc crustal accretion processes associated with subduction initiation in intra-oceanic convergent margins. Downhole logging will provide in situ measurements from the volcanic basement intervals in two 1 km deep holes in the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Forearc.
Results will help test the following hypotheses:
- Forearc basalt tholeiites lie beneath boninites in the volcanic stratigraphy in this setting; and
- Forearc lithosphere created during subduction initiation is the birthplace of supra-subduction zone ophiolites.
